Hydro jetting is a drain cleaning method that uses water at high pressure, delivered through a specialised nozzle, to scour the inside of a pipe. Hydro jetting cleans a drain with water instead of a cable. A machine pressurises water and sends it down a hose to a nozzle sized for the pipe. The nozzle has jets angled backward, which do two things at once: they drive the nozzle forward up the line, and they blast the pipe wall clean at every point around its circumference. Instead of making a hole through a blockage, jetting strips the pipe back to its full bore. That is the whole idea, and everything else is detail.
How the water does the work
Two things make jetting effective, and neither is simply force. The first is that the water reaches the entire wall. A drain cable finds the path of least resistance, which is the middle of a blockage; water under pressure has no such preference and cleans all the way around. The second is flow: the volume of water carries the loosened material back to the access point where it can be recovered, rather than leaving it in the line.
This is why a jetting job is specified by more than pressure. Flow rate, nozzle design and pipe diameter all matter, and a nozzle right for a large sewer will damage a small waste pipe.
